1. Background:
JAGFOS has its origins in a series of bilateral symposiums held between the U.S. and Germany (since 1996), Japan and the U.S. (since 1998), and Japan and Germany (since 2005). Based on the credibility and the enriched academic networks established among these countries, JSPS has decided to hold annual Japanese-American-German Frontiers of Science symposiums in cooperation with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences in the U.S. for the purpose of bringing together young scholars from the three countries and promoting an active exchange of knowledge, both internationally and interdisciplinary, among them.
As the Memorandum of Understanding has been signed among the three organizations in May 2018, trilateral symposiums are to be hosted annually in rotating countries beginning in Japan in 2019 and therefore terminate the previous three bilateral symposiums.

The location of the symposiums alternate between Japan, the U.S., and Germany.
3. Number of sessions: Six
4. Number of participants:
About 72 (24 from each country)
Each session comprises three PGMs*-cum-chairs (one from each country), an introductory speaker, two speakers, and general participants.
