Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research

Outline of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research <KAKENHI>

Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research are competitive research funds that are intended to significantly develop all scientific research (research based on the free ideas of the researcher), from basic to applied research in all fields, ranging from the humanities and the social sciences to the natural sciences. The grants provide financial support for creative and pioneering research projects that will become the foundation of social development. The research projects are selected using a peer-review screening process (screening by multiple researchers whose field of specialization is close to that of the applicant).

Research results obtained under these Grants-in-Aid are widely published in academic journals.

From FY1999, some functions of the Grants-in-Aid program were transferred to JSPS from Monbusho (now Monbu Kagakusho [Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)]).

KAKENHI ESSAY SERIES

From January 2009, this corner is provided as one of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) Program's PR initiatives. It posts essays by researchers who are or have conducted research using KAKENHI, in which they express their views and wishes regarding the program.
Each month, one researcher will be asked to write an essay for this corner.

Results generated through the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Program

This “Results generated through the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Program” section was set up in December 2011 as part of PR initiatives for the program. The new PR section mainly introduces research results such as those produced through the involvement of many researchers and outcomes that have become notable, owing to long-term efforts by researchers.

Frontline Scientific Research Projects Advanced in JAPAN

We have published a booklet introduces large-scale research projects newly adopted in FY 2020, namely under the categories “Specially Promoted Research” and “Scientific Research (S)”, carried out by a single researcher or a relatively small number of researchers, and “Transformative Research Areas(A/B)”, carried out by multiple researches or a research group. (For detailed information of these categories, see "Types of Grants Programs".)
It is hoped that this booklet will help to enhance understanding of research activities in universities and other research institutions in Japan.
