Online Japanese Lesson and Homestay Program (FY2021)

Online Japanese Lesson and Homestay Program was held in May to August, 2021

Co-organized by the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI, and JSPS, an online Japanese lesson and Homestay program was held during the period from May to August, 2021.
Some 130 Fellows participated in the online Japanese lesson, which was held 3 times (90 minutes per lesson). The group was divided into 4 classes (beginner, elementary, intermediate, and advanced) based on the participants’ levels of proficiency. In the beginner class, they learned how to give greetings, introduce themselves, and order meals, while in the advanced class, they engaged in discussions and challenged using business Japanese. Designed around the theme “Survival Japanese,” the course focused on making the best use of Japanese when limited by time and circumstance.
After the course ended, we received precious comments from the participants, such as “I really enjoyed the lessons and I am feeling much more confident speaking basic phrases in Japanese.” And, “It was a nice introduction to the Japanese culture and also to the Japanese tongue. I'm sure that what I learned during these lessons will be useful in the future.”

The online Homestay program was held one day for a period of about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It offered an opportunity for the Fellows to practice their Japanese, engaging in free conversation, and even participate in cooking with their host families or take a stroll around the neighborhood with them. In total, 130 Fellows participated in this program. They were matched with their host families via a questionnaire that was carried out in advance.
We felt rewarded by the high evaluation that the participants gave the program. 79% of them assessed it as “Excellent.” We were also happy to received nice comments, such as “I found the homestay experience to be very useful and enjoyable, it made me look forward more to participating in the JSPS program.” And, “The homestay was really welcomed. I could practice my Japanese and it's a good immersion into Japanese life. Moreover, my host family was so kind. Thank you for this experience!”
