Overview the System

Purpose

This program gives focused funding to projects that form higher-education networks and linkages with strategically important countries and regions. In doing so, it seeks to strengthen the grobal development capacity of Japanese universities while fostering excellent human resources who will play active roles on the global stage.
While building an internationally recognized system of high-quality university education in Japan, the program supports projects that advance the international exchange of high-quality Japanese student and the strategic acceptance of excellent overseas students. A program committee established within JSPS screens applications and evaluates projects.

Educational Institutions Covered

National, public,and private universities in Japan In addition, junior colleges and technical colleges are included as instisutions that conduct projects in collaboration with universities

Number of Projects Selected

Depending on the status of applications, the number is adjusted within the allocated budget.

Funding period

Up to 5 years.

The Base Amount of Subsidies

Depends on the year and type of application.

The Screening of Projects

The Inter-University Exchange Project Program Committee, which is administered principally by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, conducts the two-stage screening—“screening of documents” based on applications submitted and “screening by interviews.” The Committee recommends project plans that become selection candidates determined by the above screening to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Upon recommendations, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology selects the project plans.
