Program Overview

Should there be any differences in wording or interpretation between the Japanese and English versions of this website, the Japanese version shall take precedence.

Purpose

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science has organized the HOPE Meeting since fiscal year 2007, with the goal of providing an opportunity for outstanding graduate students and early-career researchers selected from the Asia-Pacific and African regions to make significant strides as researchers who will lead scientific advancement in their respective regions. The HOPE Meeting broadens their intellectual perspectives and deepens their personal development through dialogue with distinguished predecessors, such as Nobel laureates in the natural sciences, who have advanced the frontiers of knowledge around the world, as well as through interaction with peers across diverse fields, including the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Nobel laureates in the fields of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, and physiology/medicine) and distinguished researchers

Approximately 110 doctoral students and young researchers selected from countries/areas in the Asia-Pacific and Africa region

Program

  • Lectures by Nobel laureates and distinguished researchers
  • Small group discussions with the lecturers (seminar style)
  • Poster sessions by participants
  • Oral presentations by multinational teams of participants
  • Cultural experience program and excursion (research facilities and cultural heritage sites)

Responsibility of Participants

Participants are obliged to submit all required documents, including abstracts for poster presentations, and meeting reports. Attendance at all components of the Meeting is also mandatory.

Participation Costs for Participants from Japan

*"Participants from Japan" are doctoral students and young researchers affiliated with research institutions in Japan, or Japanese doctoral students and young researchers affiliated with research institutions outside of Japan. For details, please refer to the Application Guidelines.
Admission is free. JSPS covers the following costs within Japan in accordance with JSPS regulations:
(1)   Round-trip transportation between the participant’s affiliated institution and the venue
(2)    Lodging, meals and costs during the meeting

Application Eligibility

- PhD students (not master students) or young researchers (PhD obtained less than 5 years* ago)
- Enrolled in/working at universities/research institutions

*Excludes periods of maternity, paternity, and childcare leave

Review and Selection Process

Participation from Japan

Foreign applicants affiliated with Japanese research institutions may apply for "Participants from Japan". (Application Guidelines are in Japanese only.)

Participants from Japan are selected through document and panel reviews conducted by the HOPE Meeting Organizing Committee.

Nominees from Overseas Nominating Institutions

[Important Notice] If you wish to participate in the HOPE Meeting from overseas, please contact the relevant institution in your country/region listed on the Overseas Nominating Institutions page.

1. Selection method
Participants are selected through recommendations by Overseas Nominating Institutions and approval by the HOPE Meeting Organizing Committee.

2. Selection Process
(June - July) JSPS requests Nominating Institutions to recommend participants
(July - October) Selection of nominees by Nominating Institutions / Nominating Institutions submit their lists of nominees and application forms to JSPS
(November) Approval of nominees by Organizing Committee members
(December) Notification of selection results
