CNRS-JSPS-JST Celebration Event for the 50th Anniversary of France-Japan Scientific Cooperation was held in Tokyo

On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, we, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, together with Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), organized an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of cooperation in science, Building the Future Together with Science. The venue was the MIRAIKAN, National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.
The opening remarks were made by HASHIMOTO Kazuhito, President of JST; Antoine PETIT, Chairman and CEO of CNRS; and SUGINO Tsuyoshi, President of JSPS. These were followed by remarks by TAKAYA Hiroki, Deputy Director General, Science & Technology Policy Bureau, MEXT; and Philippe SETTON, Ambassador of France in Japan.
In the two panel discussions held in the morning, in addition to the representatives of the three co-organizers, Claire GIRY, President and CEO of the French National Research Agency (ANR); KAWAI Maki, President of the National Institutes of Natural Sciences; Dean LEWIS, President of the University of Bordeaux; and FUJII Teruo, President of the University of Tokyo, participated in discussions on the trends in science and technology in Japan and France. Also speaking were Livio DE LUCA, CNRS Senior Researcher, Models and Simulations for Architecture and Heritage Laboratory, and TAKAMURA Yukari, Professor, Institute for Future Initiatives, the University of Tokyo, who both are researchers with close ties to Japan and France. The morning concluded with remarks by Jean-Eric PAQUET, Ambassador of the European Union to Japan, and FUJII Teruo, President of the University of Tokyo.
The afternoon sessions comprised individual discussions on the following five themes: Materials, Artificial Intelligence and Embodiment, Biological Bases of Ecological Actions, From Particle Physics to Cosmology, and Heritage Studies. The participants included young and senior researchers from Japan and France, who engaged in lively exchanges. At the conclusion of the event, each of the thematic sessions presented their findings, ending the event on a high note.
This event marked the first step toward the next 50 years of scientific cooperation between Japan and France.
