Open science is a broad concept that encompasses both open access and the open sharing of research data. As open access expands, research outputs become widely available to all users, thereby accelerating the creation of knowledge through new collaborations that transcend institutional affiliations, academic disciplines, and national borders, while also generating new knowledge and innovation.

In light of domestic and international developments in open science, JSPS has established its basic policies on open access to research publications and research data management in order to promote open science.
