Global Symposium on Scientific Breakthroughs

Hakubun Shimomura
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) hosted the "Global Symposium on Scientific Breakthroughs" on May 26, 2015, as a side event of the 4th Annual Meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC). GRC is a high-level forum that assembles the heads of leading research-promotion agencies from around the world to discuss initiatives related to common issues. The Global Symposium, which was open to the public, addressed one of the themes of the 4th Annual GRC Meeting: Research Funding for Scientific Breakthroughs.

Approximately 500 participants, including those from universities and other research institutions, government officials, and the general public, joined the Global Symposium and Hakubun Shimomura, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, delivered the special lecture. Other guest speakers included a Nobel Laureate and other prominent figures. Active discussion was made possible through a panel discussion.
