R021 Committee on Food and pre-illness marker

Aims and Goals

One of the basis for health promotion is food. For the promotion it is essential to maintain the homeostasis. We should then recognize the intermediate residing between health and illness states, which is represented as a pre-illness maker. Our increased understanding of the pre-illness markers makes us select functional food products properly. Findings and verifications of proper markers would help to develop current food industry more and more. These activities of the Committee will make it possible to innovate Japan as a world-top runner for healthy longevity. The Committee is already in progress for this fundamental purposes

Research Themes

The Committee advises industry on food research dimensions in general. In particular, messages are sent with respect to interrelationships between health and pre-illness markers. We have thus made up an academia-industry consortium to deal with pre-illness makers usable in super-aged societies. We also publicize consequent reports and send them to each country.
These activities include the following agendas.

(1) Regular meetings are held in a closed level.
Each is made up by selected academia and industry members to have discussions of mutual interests. It aims at getting a consensus in between. Also, the meetings sometimes invite outstanding experts from external areas internationally, who are asked to talk about up-to-date and sophisticated issues.
(2) The Committee holds branches of its own.
The branches also work in a closed system. They also discuss, for example, how to exploit useful pre-illness markers. The results are shown to every Committee member.
Also, academia and industry committee members work together for social applications.
(3) Information exchanges among the Committee members in a closed level.
(4) Invited lectures in local and global science councils (open).
(5) Training course (closed)
Both academia and industrial committee member, are invited training events for their development of pre-illness marker using skills and techniques.
