This symposium was planned on the initiative of JSPS and Heart Institute of São Paulo University Medical School (InCor), with partnership of the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (WPI-IIIS), University of Tsukuba, Santa Cruz Japanese Hospital, World Premier International Research Center Initiative, Fujita-Ninomiya Chair at São Paulo University Law School, with institutional support of the Consulate General of Japan in São Paulo.
    The main lecturers were Dr. Masashi Yanagisawa and Shun Nakajima from the University of Tsukuba and the moderators were Dr. Geraldo Lorenzi and Pedro Genta from InCor. The presence of JSPS was marked by Dr. Yusaku Nakabeppu and Liaison Officer Abigail Hughes from JSPS San Francisco Office.  
    The opening ceremony was held on September 17 at 11:00 a.m. at InCor with the presence of 55 participants.  The symposium itself began at noon, with open speech by Dr. Carlos de Carvalho, Full Professor of Pneumology at InCor, Dr. Yusaku Nakabeppu from JSPS San Francisco Office, and Dr. Geraldo Lorenzi of InCor.  
    The first to deliver the lecture was Dr. Yanagisawa, having Dr. Geraldo Lorenzi as commentator, followed by a Q&A session.
    At 13:15, Dr. Nakajima delivered his lecture, followed by a Q&A session.
    At the end of the sessions, Dr. Geraldo Lorenzi made his final comments. There were 97 participants in person and 80 on line.
After the lectures, there was a scientific seminar with about 30 researchers and graduate students who made presentations of their works. At the end, there was a debate among the participants who considered the meeting a valuable opportunity to discuss their research.  

　The next day, September 18, Japanese visitors went to the Fundação Butantan, an important state institution to produce a variety of vaccines, which began more than 100 years ago with snake poisons and today with Covid 19.  Dr. Giulia Ceppoloni guided the visit and there was a presentation about the activities of the institution by specialists.  There was a discussion about the possibilities of future collaboration between the two institutions.
