受賞理由

   スティーブン・フィリップ・ハッベル博士は,「生物多様性と生物地理学における統合中立説」を提唱し,樹木の多様性が高いことで知られる熱帯林に大規模な森林調査区を設けてその群集構造を明らかにするというユニークな手法により,その仮説の検証を行うことで、生物多様性研究に大きな功績をあげた。
    樹木など同じ資源を利用する生物どうしが同じ群集で共存するメカニズムは,従来,群集を構成する種の生態的地位(ニッチェ)の違いによって説明されてきた。つまり,群集を構成する種には種特性の違いがあり,群集内にその特性が有利に働く環境と不利に働く環境があることによって,共存が可能となると考えられてきた。しかし,ハッベル博士の中立説は,群集の生物多様性が,種の生態的地位の違いや種の特性を無視しても,その場所で進化したり移入したりする種と絶滅あるいは移出する種のバランスという確率的なプロセスを考えることで十分説明できるとするものである。
    実際に,マッカーサー博士とウィルソン博士の島嶼生物地理学では,種の特性を考えなくても,島の大きさや大陸からの距離といった要因からその島の生物多様性が説明できる。また,ハッベル博士らはパナマのバロ・コロラド島に50ヘクタールという従来の森林調査の常識を超える大規模な調査区を設け,その樹木群集構造について詳細に解析した。この研究で得られた樹種数-個体数分布は,種特性を無視し,ランダムなプロセスを仮定したシミュレーション結果と一致した。これらの結果は中立説によって多様性が説明できる可能性を示すものとして,大きな注目をあびた。これらの研究が発表されると,世界中に大きな論争が巻き起こり,さまざまな検証が行われた。現在までに,中立説だけでは説明できない例も知られているが,生物多様性の維持メカニズムにおいて確率的なプロセスや,さまざまな空間スケールでの生物の移動の重要性を提唱したという点で,その先駆性が高く評価されている。
    ハッベル博士らの研究が発表された後,世界各地の熱帯林にバロ・コロラド島と同様の大規模調査区が作られ,熱帯林の樹木多様性に関する検証研究が行われた。現在,こうした調査区は温帯林にも拡大され,スミソニアン熱帯研究所を中心とする国際的ネットワークとなっている。また,こうした研究が進むことにより,生物多様性を考慮した生態系の管理や希少種の保全など,応用面でも大きな示唆が得られている。
    以上のように,ハッベル博士の研究は,生物群集における多様性の成立・維持メカニズムに関して大きな理論的貢献をすると同時に,実際のフィールド研究においても新たな局面を切り開くなど,生物多様性科学の発展において高く評価されるものである。
