JSPS-DST アジア学術セミナー：分子と超分子物質における機能設計

1. 委託事業・セミナー名

2. セミナーの目的

電子的、磁気的、光学的機能性を有する分子や超分子、また、その集合体は、近年、基礎的化学、物理の観点から大きな関心をよび、また、分子を用いた素子への応用の観点から発展が期待されている。この中で、電子的機能からは半導体、金属、超伝導体とともに、分子の電子構造の特徴を基礎とした半導体素子等の機能にも関心が及び、磁性の分野では、分子から組み立てられた強磁性や光応答性のある分子磁性体が見出されている。分子の光学的性質を利用した機能や超高速光応答現象などにも興味がもたれている。分子や超分子一つ一つの構造と機能との相関を原子分解能で解明することにも多くの努力がなされている。また、異分子間の界面、2次元分子配列、表面での触媒反応等の仕組みも分子の基本的な機能・性質と深い関わりを持ち、大きな関心が寄せられている。本セミナーでは分子・超分子のデザインと機能を主題として、機能性分子・超分子の設計と機能発現、電子的、磁気的、光学的性質の解明、原子分解能での機能性分子の構造と機能の相関の解明、界面での特異現象の発現、機能性の応用と素子への発展等について、議論を展開する。また、将来の分子・超分子科学の発展を展望する。

組織委員会での議論に基づき、アジア地域の化学会（可能な限り殆んどすべて）に会議案内と推薦依頼を送ると共に、講師にも推薦依頼を行った。これにより応募した候補者の中から選考を行い、研究上の評価に基づき、最終候補者を決定した。この中で、国による偏りをなくすことも考慮に入れた。

9. 本セミナーで得られた成果

(1) 学術的な観点からの成果について
分子及び超分子の化学、物理に関する多様な分野での分野を超えた交流をおこなうことにより、今まで個々の分野では考えにくかった問題について発展的な展開をおこなうことができた。この10年、アジア諸国、特にインドでの研究の発展は目覚しいものがあり、講師、受講者の講演の中で、多くの刺激的な研究展開の内容が発表され、新しい知見が明らかにされると共に、研究交流の中から共同研究の芽が生まれる可能性が出てきた。多くの研究者の研究発表の中で、アジアの研究者の研究が世界の研究をリードしているという事実が実感として強く印象つけられた。学術的な観点からも、本分野におけるアジアの研究発展における一つのマイルストーンと位置づけることができる。

(2) 国際交流及び若手研究者育成の観点からの成果について
日本、インド、中国、韓国、台湾、シンガポール、ベトナム、タイ、バングラデシュ等多くの国からの参加者があり、直接の対話を通して、親密な交流を行うことができた。この中で、若手研究者と若手研究者、若手研究者と講師との国、分野を越えた交流が積極的に行われ、これからの研究交流、共同研究の芽が生まれる可能性が出てきた。本分野におけるアジア学術セミナーが過去に行われたのは10年前に遡る。この10年、アジア諸国における研究活動の発展は目覚しいものがあり、若手研究者の研究活動も急速に高まっている。従来、欧米諸国との研究交流が研究展開の多くの部分を占めていたが、若手研究者の交流を通して、アジア地域が世界の研究をリードすることが近い将来に大いに期待できる。
ヨーロッパには若手研究者の研究活動をエンカレッジするNATO Advanced Instituteがあり、国際的な活躍をしている研究者と受講生が1週間程度の期間、講演、研究交流をできる場がある。アジア学術セミナーがアジアにおけるこのような場となることが期待される。

2. Purpose of Seminar

   The Asia Academic Seminar is one of the most important programs for enhancing the research activities of young scientists working in Asian countries. It is designed to spur scientific achievement in the region by introducing the latest scientific advances to the young Asian researchers who attend them. In the seminar, invited lecturers, who are recognized as experts in the international academic community, give lectures to young researchers, and scientific exchanges between lecturers and young attendees also contribute to the educational activities. The Asia Academic Seminar has been held since 1994 in different fields of science in different Asian countries. The Seminar titled "Molecular and supramolecular materials with designed functions" is organized under the auspice of Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS) in Japan and Department of Science and Technology (DST) in India. In this decade, functionalized molecular and supramolecular materials have been one of the central interests in the research field of molecular science and also an important target in cutting-edge molecular technology. This seminar focuses on the current topics on the molecular science in relation to functionalities of molecular systems. Followings are topics: Design of functionalized molecules and supramolecules, surface and interface phenomena in molecular systems, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of functionalized molecules and molecular assemblies, theoretical approach to functionalized molecules and supramolecules.

8. Please describe the achievements of the seminar.

   The research field of molecular and supramolecular materials has a wide range of subjects, which are extended from basic science of chemistry, physics and biology, to electronics applications. In this seminar, we invited lecturers who were recognized internationally as leading scientists in a large variety of fields in molecular materials science. The attendees are selected also in a large variety of fields in different countries.
   The discussion between participants working in different fields has been made successfully in a very stimulating and friendly way in the seminar. This could make us to think about what we do not recognize as research issues when we discuss with colleagues in the same field. From this point of view, this Asia Academic Seminar could result in an important achievement in developing the interdisciplinary region in molecular materials science. The seminar was very productive in seeding collaborations between researchers in different fields and in different Asian countries. It also contributed to enhancing interaction between young Asian scientists and is expected to create a personnel network, which is important in the future growth of research activities in the Asian region.
   This seminar was held 10 years after the first Asia Academic Seminar in molecular science was held in Bangalore. The research activities in Asian countries have grown steeply in these 10 years. In the seminar this time, we recognized that researches in Asian countries have become at the top level, and they have been playing a leading role in the global molecular science community. This seminar can be situated as a mile stone in the research in the molecular materials science field in the Asian countries.
   One weak point in the seminar is that participations of the attendees in the discussion was not so enough. This might be caused by that many of the lectures did not include introductory issues.
   The seminar is press-released in a local newspaper in Pune as an important scientific event.
