Committee Achievements and Special Activities

1. Cast Iron Subcommittee
(1) Simulation of the structure and strength distribution of spheroidal graphite cast iron
Achievements: Presented a method for simulating the structure and strength distribution of thin-walled spheroidal graphite cast iron and clarified future issues.
(2) Regarding spheroidal graphite’s nuclear matter
Achievements: Clarified that spheroidal graphite’s nuclear matter differs greatly depending on spheroidizing conditions and the molten metal’s degree of purity.
(3) Abrasion-resistant cast iron
Achievements: Alloy design involving high performance cast iron alloys for use in components subject to severe abrasion from minerals and acquisition of basic data on structural control
(4) Design and heat treatment characteristics of alloys for cast iron rolls for rolling iron and steel
Achievements: Designed alloys to improve the characteristics of cast iron used as a material in rolls for rolling iron and steel and acquired basic data related to heat treatment.
(5) Quantitative ultrasound evaluation of cast iron structure
Achievements: Conducted non-destructive ultrasound testing on cast iron and obtained basic reference data for quantitative evaluations of structural changes in various types of graphite from nodular to flake.
(6) Ultra-hard abrasion-resistant cast iron alloy inserts
Achievements: Succeed in developing ultra-hard alloy insert rock drill bits with acicular cast iron.

2. Casting Processes Subcommittee
(1) Methods for producing frozen molds and casting quality
Achievements: Conducted research into methods for producing frozen casting molds, particularly in relation to methods for removing gases and in relation to product quality, obtaining the basic knowledge to manufacture sound castings.
(2) Role of coating in lost-foam casting
Achievements: Elucidated the role of coating and the conditions coating materials need to meet in lost-foam casting
(3) Study of reprocessing techniques for molding sand used in green sand, inorganic shell, and organic self-hardening molds and the outcomes of the techniques
Achievements: Organized and systematized 35 collected theses.
(4) Environmental load reduction in melting processes
Achievements: Elucidated the status and effects of the development of facilities to cut CO2 in cast iron melting.
