"Strategic Initiatives for University Internationalization"
On 22-23 May, 2008, a symposium jointly sponsored by JSPS and the National Science Foundation (NSF) was held in Washington, DC. Titled "Strategic Initiatives for University Internationalization," the symposium attracted 86 representatives from US and Japanese universities who are engaged in campus internationalization programs. Giving them an opportunity to share best practices and form collaborations, the symposium focused on the internationalization strategies of research universities.
Among the participants in the symposium were Dr. Tsutomu Kimura (President, National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation); Prof. Junichi Mori (Professor, The International Center, Kyoto University), who are both members of the University International Strategy Council, JSPS; and Dr. Hiroshi Ota (Associate Professor International Strategy Office, Hitotsubashi University), who works as a research advisor, JSPS Project Team for University Internationalization. Attendees from SiH pilot universities gave presentations on their institutional activities in concurrent sessions held on a variety of theme-related topics. "Strategic Fund for Establishing International Headquarters in Universities" was introduced as well.
