Japan-India Dialogue of Vice Chancellors/Presidents on Academic Exchange between Japan and India
Professor Motoyuki Ono, President of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, joined the Japan-India Dialogue of Vice Chancellors/Presidents on Academic Exchange between Japan and India held on 21 August in New Delhi. This meeting was proposed on the occasion of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to India.
As the co-chairs, Prof. Yuichiro Anzai, President of Keio University, and Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat, Chairman of University Grants Commission, offered opening remarks. They were followed by comments on the current state of academic exchange between the two countries by officials from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) on the Japanese side and from the Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD) on the Indian side. Then, Prof. Ono and Prof. Thorat described their organization's bi- and multi-lateral programs for supporting academic exchange, following which the university representatives introduced themselves. The chair's summary of the discussions stated that the meeting had contributed to deeping understanding between the Japanese and Indian universities and that, having identified the present state of academic exchange, consideration should be given to continuing the dialogue with an eye to promoting greater collaboration. Endorsed by the members, this summary was handed by co-chairs to Prime Minister Abe and MHRD Minister Arjun Singh who had come for the final session.
