- 1) Upon what concept was the seminar planned and organized? (As reference, attach lecture summaries and other related documents.)
- The seminar introduced a three-part structure : lecture, practice and evening sessions in order (1) to introduce new concepts during the lectures, (2) to use and practice new concept, (3) and to review and to discuss more about their usage in real research and project environments during the evening session.
- 2) What results were achieved from an academic viewpoint? Please list them concretely.
- From the academic point of view, participants achieved data preservation by mastering the archiving process from scanning, metadata managing, annotating, adding georeference, and storing the case study digital data from the Maritime Silk Roads.
The new emerging technologies will be applied to current archive and preservation so that contents oriented academic activities will progress rapidly.- 3) What results were achieved in terms of international exchange and young researcher development?
- Team work achieved during the 10 days seminar the cooperation and multi-cultural, multi-lingual dialogue among participants from 9 countries. Each working group included participants from different countries and different fields. A cooperation network has been built in order to promote and to launch R&D cooperation. Since the groups were organized with the mixture of countries, languages, different disciplines, they also learned the importance of different culture. Also, during the Seminar, most of them stayed at the same hotel in shared room.
Cooperation over a JASS04NET (Cooperative NETWORK on JASS04) web portal will be launched in few weeks in order to establish an multi-lingual cooperative for research and education involving the lecturers partners from US, Iran and Japan. Case studies involving the participants will be launched over internet. Also the lecturers will produce a book following the JASS04 seminar as case study book.
The seminar was specially effective in the structure, the content and in the length. Suggestion of improvements could be done on more specific case study including multi-country and cross-disciplinary issues.
Supporting Staff of NII organized the seminar very smoothly and they supported the seminar intensively.
The lecturers appreciated the dynamism and high motivation of participants and also the structure of the seminar to follow the learning and training process of the participants from the lecture, then practice and evening session to re-assess the all day by having group discussions and plenary session.
The questionnaire focused on the content of the seminar, on the lectures and practices according to the main topics of the seminar (6), the talks (2), the technical tours (2), and the evening sessions (1).
The participants had to assess each activity according to four criteria: (1) the content of the activity, (2) the level of each activity according to their educational and experience background, (3) the help that the activity will provide to each participant to his/her future research work, and (4) the enhancement of the participant’s knowledge. The metric of the questionnaire is as follows: A (strongly agree), B (agree), C (neutral), D (disagree), E (completely disagree). (See the attached result of the questionnaire for the detail.)The questionnaire results show the effectiveness of the seminar according to its contents and tuning for the participants background, according to the usefulness for the participants, and the enhancement of the participants’ knowledge.

The JSPS Seminar program has been a very good opportunity to promote dissemination of advanced technology for real usage and real project as it involved Advanced Digital Technology-Assisted Cultural Archive and Preservation along the Maritime Silk Roads. The selection notice gave us only three months to finalize the seminar but cooperation inside NII, between UNESCO and NII, and also between various organizations collaborating along the Maritime Silk Roads enabled to set a high quality seminar.
