Organizing an International Symposium

The 8th Solanaceae and 2nd Cucurbitaceae Genomics
Joint Conference (SOL&ICuGI2011)
The 178th Committee on Plant Molecular Design

1. Outline
The 178th committee on Plant Molecular Design hereby organized the international symposium mentioned in the title.
  • Date: November 28-December 2, 2011
  • Place: Kobe Convention Center
    (Kobe, Japan)
  • Statistics: 312 participants [Domestic 157, Oversea 155 from 22 countries (Netherland 24, Korea 21, France 20, USA 19, China 14, Spain 10, Israel 7, UK 7, Germany 3, Swiss 3, Denmark 3, Russia 2, New Zealand 2, India 2, Canada 2, Thailand, Taiwan, Colombia, Australia, South Africa, Belgium, Italy)]
  • Presentations: Total 212 [Oral 105, Poster 107]
  • Overseas invited lecturers: S. Rombauts (VIB-UGent, Belgium), A. Bendahmane (URGV-INRA, France), D. Choi (SNU, Korea), J. Giovannoni(Cornell U, USA), G. Giuliano (ENEA, Italy), S. Huang (BGI, China), BC Kang (SNU, Korera), Y Xu (BAAFS, China), L. Muller (BTI, USA), MC Daunay (INRA, Frnace), N. Katzir (NYRC, Israel), J. Garcia-Mas (CSIC-IRTA, Spain), A. Aharoni (WIS, Israel), A. Granell (CSIC-UPV, Spain) et al.
  • Total amount of budget: 22.3 M yen
(incl. the support of 2.0 M yen by JSPS)
This conference was initially planed to hold in Tsukuba on October 2011. However, it was moved to Kobe Convention Center because of the Tohoku earthquake (March 11, 2011). More than 300 delegates from over 22 countries registered for this conference. It was an amazing number for us when considering our current situation after the disaster on March 11, 2011 in Japan, and recently a high exchange rate of yen. Actually many international conferences which were scheduled to hold in Japan after the earthquake were cancelled or postponed. Therefore, we believe this Joint Conference should boost up Japanese scientists and even Japanese society.

2. Activity report and publication
The conference was commenced by the keynote lecture by Prof. Satoshi Tabata (Kazusa DNA Research Institute)(Photo 1). He talked about a prospective of plant science after the Genomic Era. In the oral presentations, 45 talks including invited talks were presented among 23 sessions (Table 1). In the poster sessions, participants made active discussions (Photo 2). Based on the votes by invited speakers, we selected 3 presentations of young scientists and awarded them as excellent presentations. At the end of the conference, we have gained recognition that the present conference was one of the best one among SOL conferences.
After normal peer review, selected full papers will be published as a special volume of the Japanese Society for Plant Cell and Molecular Biology (JSPCMB) in the journal “Plant Biotechnology.

Table 1. Main oral topics presented
Reference genome, Fruit biology, Biotic stress, Abiotic stress, Development, Diversity and evolution, Bioresources, Functional genomics, Molecular breeding, Metabolome, Proteome, Bioinformatics, Emarging technology, Organella genomics, Secondary metabolite, Tomato, Cucumber, Pepper, Eggplant, Coffee, Watermelon, Pumpkin, Melon, Potato, Tobacco, Petunia

3. Future tasks
Full genome sequencing of the model cultivar/genotype has been completed in Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae crops in 2010 and 2011, and currently efforts to re-sequence the industrially important cultivars/genotypes in each member is in progress. Therefore, it is increasingly important to make a strategy how industrial sectors utilize the generated genomic information for their activities. The 178th committee therefore expected to play a large role in the cooperation between industry and academia to propose a cutting edge, innovative session at an international symposium.

4. Summary
SOL conference is held by the Solanaceae Genomics Network every year in a host country, and aimed for exchanging the progress of Solanaceae genomics research and discussing how to utilize the achievement for industry. The first SOL conference was held in Washington DC, USA in 2003, and we organized the 8th SOL conference as the joint conference with the 2nd ICuGI (International Cucurbita Genomics Initiative) conference. The 178th committee on Plant Molecular Design was established for utilizing the fruits of genomics research on Solanaceae and Cucurbitacear crops to the industrial sectors in Japan. Full genome sequencing of the model cultivars in Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae has been completed in 2010 and 2011, respectively. In order the Japanese industrial sectors to get in touch with those results, the 178th committee planed and organized the SOL&ICuGI2011.

As the conference, organizing committee invited 45 outstanding lecturers internationally and provided an exciting opportunity to the researchers who are active in the front lines of plant molecular design. The international activity and interaction of the 178th committee has always been well-received by the home and overseas researchers and communities, and this cordial relation has helped us make a great success of SOL&ICuGI activities. This opportunity is also motivational for the young researchers in this filed.

The 178th committee extends grateful thanks for the support by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
