1. Outline
The 164th committee on Genome Technologies organized the international symposium mentioned in the title.
The 9th International Workshop on Advance Genomics was held under the main theme of "Revolution of Genome Science." And, there were 18 invited lectures, 42 posters and 11 corporate seminars. We worried the bad influence of the great Tohoku earthquake on 3.11. But, it was negligible with no cancelling from oversea speakers and almost full participants during the three days’ workshop.
After the opening remark from honorary chairman Dr. Sakaki, there was the first session “Personal Genome/ Medical Genomics” and lectures were give on the topics of disease gene hunting using the second generation sequencers and the application of the found genes to the personalized medicine.
In the 2nd session “Computational Biology”, there were lectures on the computational analysis of massive sequence data and software development. Dr. Charles Cantor (SEQUENOM Inc.) who has been one of the leading figures in the genome technology field from the start of Human Genome project gave Keynote lecture on the future of genome techonolgy and its application in medicine.
The 2nd day started with session “Metagenomics” where the analysis of human flora was discussed. Dr. Ohno from RIKEN caught a lot of attention showing the possibility of preventing O157 intoxication from the gut microbe analysis.
“Cancer Genomics” session held in the afternoon was the most exciting one. This area is now under great competition where most of the mass genome sequencing is underway. Due to the heated discussion, the opening of the banquet was delayed.
Final day started with the session “Epigenomics”. This area needs various different ways of analysis, and the development new methods are underway. Also, how to integrate many different data into one picture was discussed.
The last session of the workshop was “New Genomic Frontier”. The lectures were given on the new sequencing methods such as real-time sequencing using single molecule measurement and the development of sequencers that use nano-pore. There was a talk by a doctor from a Canadian hospital who used prototype single molecule real-time sequencer for the diagnosis of the cancer. I was impressed by the challenging attitude.
All the posters were exhibited for entire meeting. Excellent posters were voted by all the invited speakers and organizing committee members. The poster awards were given to 1st and 2nd place winner. We also made abstract book with 106 pages
3. Future tasks
The International Workshop on Advance Genomics (AGW) is now well known as an international workshop organized by the 164th committee worldwide, yet it character has been changing from time to time. At the beginning, its main purpose was to introduce “Human Genome Project” that was planned and promoted mainly in US and Europe to Japanese researchers and gave the up-to-date information and perspective of the project. After the advance of Genome Science and Technology within Japan as well as abroad, AGW is now becoming a forum for the Japanese genome researchers.
Now we can see the upheaval of genome research in newly developing countries. Thus, it will be important to became a forum for the genome researchers in those countries, especially in Asia region, in the future.
4. Acknowledgments
The 164th committee is grateful for the support by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
