2. Activity report and publication
ISAC-4 focused on advanced engineering ceramics and composites and featured a complete and up-to-date technical program relevant to the mechanical behavior and structural design of monolithic and composite ceramics. 131 oral and 94 poster presentations including 51 invited lectures were given in 23 sessions during ISAC-4 (Table 1).

In ISAC-4, the committee selected 10 young researchers through a vote by invited speakers and awarded them with ”Poster Presentation Award for Young Researcher in ISAC-4” (Photo 1).

The contributions made by researchers at the symposium will be organized by the 124th committee as ISAC-4 proceedings. After normal peer review, selected full papers will be published as a special volume of the Ceramics Society of Japan (CSJ) series in journal “Key Engineering Materials” published by Trans Tech Publications Inc. A part of paper will be in “IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering”.

3. Future tasks
Advanced ceramics are now a prominent part of economic and industrial development, supporting our society from various aspects. The forefront of advanced ceramics research also rapidly grows, leading into new fields far beyond the conventional image of ceramics. The 124th committee therefore expected to play a large role in the cooperation between industry and academia to propose a cutting edge, innovative session at an international symposium.

4. Summary
The International Symposium on Advanced Ceramics (ISAC) is a series of symposium organized by the 124th committee to gather researchers in ceramics field all over the world and discuss all aspects of advanced ceramics from processing, characterization to applications. The first of the symposium series was held at Kurume, Japan in 1997. The second at Shanghai in 2002 and the third at Singapore in 2006 followed. The 124th committee keeps bringing an international forum for the discussion and review of the latest achievement of advanced ceramics.

As the forth of the series, ISAC-4 invited 51 outstanding lecturers internationally and provided an exciting opportunity that researchers who are active in the front lines of ceramics field can join in discussion and connect with other experts across the symposium (Photo 2). The international activity and interaction of the 124th committee has always been well-received by the home and overseas researchers and communities, and this cordial relation has helped us make a great success of ISAC series over the last decade. This opportunity is also motivational for the young researchers in this filed.

The 124th committee extends grateful thanks for the support by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
