  2. Details and Accomplishment
  3.   The 4th International Congress on the Science and Technology of Steelmaking was held at Nagaragawa Convention Center sponsored by the 19th Committee on Steelmaking in Japan Society for Promotion of Science and Iron & Steel Institute of Japan. The congress has been regarded as the most worthy place for all researchers and engineers all over the world to get together and discuss up-to-date topics on the science and technology of steelmaking process. The first meeting was held at Chiba, Japan in 1996, followed by the second at Swansea, Wales in 2001 and the third at Charlotte, USA in 2005. As shown in Table 1, the 4th meeting achieved 173 presentation and successful discussion with 259 participants (78 persons from 20 countries including Germany, China, Australia, Korea, Canada, USA, and Ukraine et al.)
The Table 2 shows the title and the number of presentation by each technical session at the 4th meeting.
Discussion was made with a wide range of topics from refining process to continuous casting. The remarkable features were that many of presentation were given especially on non- metallic inclusions, in addition to environmental topics, and also that a new field such as micro- wave processing was discussed.

Steelmaking process requires various advanced technologies for saving energy and CO2 reduction. Japanese steelmaking industries hold key significant roles in preserving the environment with high-end technologies. They provide high-quality steels to heavy industries such as automobile technology, which is one of our key industries. They also perform a significant role to develop a process in recycling iron & steel and various by-products.
The information discussed in the present meeting on the science and technology of steelmaking process is quite useful to keep our strong competitive power and to organize internationally cooperative systems that are necessary to architect sustainable recycling society. During the three days, those information were exchanged and discussed deeply.
In this meeting, all the information was collected in the proceedings (a book with 700 pages and CD-ROM) and was distributed to all participants.
As shown in Figures 1 & 2, we had really nice and friendly international exchange at a welcome party on the previous night and a banquet on the second night. The Figure 2 shows “Kagami biraki” at the opening of a banquet (which is an annual event of breaking a lid of a sake cask with a wooden hammer, celebrating the opening and wishing good luck.).
The next meeting will be held in Dresden, Germany in 2012.

  4. Future tasks
  5.   Recently a large amount of steel is manufactured in China and the reduction of CO2 emission is strongly required all over the world. It is very significant that the meeting was held in Japan, who is a leading nation of steelmaking technology and environmental technology. However, the situation is very difficult for us to deal with all those tasks by ourselves, since the development of environmental technology for the saving energy and the reduction of CO2 emission will be required more strongly in the future than before. Therefore, we hope that we will have a series of meetings continuously to exchange information and to deal with the above tasks on the basis of international collaboration.
