Detailed Information

International Symposium

  1. Name of Symposium
The 7th International Workshop on Advanced Genomics
  2. Purpose of Symposium
The human genome project not only clarified genome sequences, but produced a new research paradigm called genome science (Genomics). The information and knowledge obtained from such genome-based research will decidedly affect the future comprehension of living organism. In addition, Genomics contributes to the applied science field, particularly drug discovery development and realization of personalized medicine. Also, in the environmental science field, Metagenomics attracts lots of attention. “Metagenomics,” is the study of genomes recovered from environmental samples as opposed to from clonal culture and this study provides us with a mechanism for analyzing previously unknown organisms.
This symposium intended to cover rapidly expanding new frontiers of genomics and survey the next evolution of genome medical biology produced by leading-edge technology, such as massively parallel sequencing.
  3. Date and Venue
    Tue., November 27 – Wed., November 28, 2008
Tokyo International Forum Hall B5 and B7
  4. Participant (including speakers)
Total 419 (394 from Japan, 25 from overseas, including 23 speakers)
Overseas attendees include: 12 from USA, 3 from UK, 2 from France, Holland, 1 from Korea,Singapore, Taiwan, Uganda, Australia
Distinguished chairs and speakers: iroyuki Aburatani, David Bentley, Atul Butte, Edwin Clark, Ron Edgar, Dusko Ehrlich, Sean Grimmond, William Hahn, Masahira Hattori, Takashi Ito, Sunghoon Kim, Hiroyuki Mano,Jane Rogers, Allen Roses, Yoshiyuki Sakaki, Anton Simeonov,Sumio Sugano, Hiroshi Tanaka, Masaru Tomita, Motonari Uesugi,Jean Weissenbach
  5. Budget of Symposium
40,000,000 yen (including 2,000,000 yen of JSPS fund aid)
  6. Scientific Program, Achievement, Publication of Symposium
The main theme of the symposium was “New Horizon,” which indicates remarkable advancement of genome related science. 18 lecture talks by invited speakers, 75 poster presentation, and 5 seminars by business organizations were held based on the plenary session topics covering six major areas of research. More than 350 participants are recorded on the both days, and the whole symposium ended in great success.
    1. Application of New Sequencing Technology
    2. Bioinformatics
    3. Metagenomics
    4. Personalized Medicine / Pharmacogenomics
    5. Chemogenomics
    6. The Role of Non-coding RNA
We fully realized a multilayered research system and the speed of research through the lectures by invited speakers. While we learned lots of latest research achievements, we also felt a sense of crisis in current Japanese situation.
The information about the lectures was taken up by many media, such as Nihon Keizai Shimbun and Nikkei BTJ journal (Dec, 2007).
At the poster session, many young researchers presented and lots of direct communication with top researchers had been achieved. A lot of private companies demonstrated the high level of interest, 5 companies held seminars and 29 companies exhibited.
The International Workshop on Advanced Genomics was held in order to invite top scientists from home and abroad to figure out the achievements of genome science research comprehensively. The 7th workshop also achieved the function as a place of the positive exchange between academia and industries with international exchanges.
We distributed 130-page book program of abstracts at the workshop as an accomplishment report.
  7. Task in the Future
Research of genome science has made substantial progress, and therefore symposia should be held as frequently as possible hopefully, and the achievement should be presented for researchers to catch up comprehensively. Expenditure, however, is the issue as well as the difficulty to invite first-line speakers in one occasion. The 8th International Workshop on Advanced Genomics has planned for April 2008.
