2008 International Symposium on Advanced Nanodevices and Nanotechnology (NPMS-8)

International symposium on “2007 Advanced Nanodevices and Nanotechnology”, supported by JSPS and organized by JSPS 151 committee, was held in the Big Island of Hawaii from 2nd to 7th of December in 2007. This symposium is a continuation of the international symposium on “New Phenomena in Mesoscopic Structures” that was first organized in 1989 with late Prof. Susumu Namba who was a chairman of the JSPS 151 committee. The symposium was organized in collaboration between Japanese and American, with general chairs of Prof. Yoshinobu Aoyagi of Tokyo Institute of Technology, a chairman of the 151 committee, and Prof. Stephan Goodnick of Arizona State University. This symposium started to discuss physics and application of new phenomena found in structures with mesoscopic scales. Now, the area has been widely known with the word “Nano”, and is covering in various fields from physics, electronics to biology. The scope of the symposium has been modified to meet the rapidly spreading research area, and we believe that it is successful to some extent.
The attendees are mainly from Japan (48) and USA (25), and other countries such as EU (12) and Korea (6). The program was composed of oral (29) and poster (44) presentations with 13 invited talks. The topics presented in the symposium included electrical and optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots as well as quantum computing applications, electrical, optical and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes as well as their device application such as field effect transistors (FETs), modeling and experiments on Si nanostructures, nanoelectronechanical system and its quantum effects, and organic and molecular devices and nanomaterials. In particular, there was an invited talk on graphine that is a recent hot topic not only from basic physics, but also from application point of view.
The symposium was successful in terms of active discussions and exchange of information mainly between Japan and USA. But, at the same time, we need to think more about possible output of nanotechnology. This may not be simple, but by continuously organizing the symposium like this one, we try to find solutions. The next symposium will be held in two years time. The proceeding of the symposium will be published in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series.
