The Fifth International Conference on Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG-V)

147th Committee on Amorphous and Nano-Crystalline Materials

The Fifth International Conference on Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG-V) was held at the Awaji Yumebutai International Conference Center in Awaji Island, Japan, from October 1st to 5th, 2006. BMG-V was a continuation of the previous four, which were held in Singapore (September 2000), Taiwan (March 2002), Beijing (October 2003), and Knoxville (U Tennessee) (May 2005), respectively. The coordination committee of Scientific Research on Priority Areas, "Material Science of Bulk metallic Glasses" supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan, hosted this conference.

Bulk metallic glasses (bulk amorphous alloys) constitute a new and exciting class of metallic materials with interesting properties for structural and functional use. For the past decade, substantial advances have been achieved in understanding the glass forming ability and synthesizing new bulk metallic glasses containing multi-components.

The objective of this conference was to provide an international forum to discuss recent progress in both fundamentals and applications of bulk metallic glasses. Papers describing atomic structure, material synthesis, glass-forming ability, and physical, chemical, thermal, magnetic, mechanical, and functional properties, from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints, were solicited.

At the conference, four days of oral sessions and one evening poster session were held. The conference attracted 191 scientists from 12 countries. The program comprised 57 oral presentations and 123 poster presentations. The oral presentations included 31 invited lectures. The proceedings of this conference will be published as a special issue of Mater. Trans. in July 2007.
