The JSPS 141st “Microbeam-analysis” Committee:

The JSPS 141st "Microbeam-analysis" Committee organized two cooperative international conferences. Outline of the conferences was as follows:
  1. Title of conferences: The 6th International Symposium on Atomic Level Characterizations for New Materials and Devices (ALC'07) and the 16th International Conference on Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS XVI )
  2. Period of Symposium: Oct. 28, -Nov. 2, 2007 (6 days)
  3. Place of Symposium: Kanazawa Ongakudo and Kanazawa Art Hall, Kanazawa
  4. Attendee: Total 605 (including participants both conferences),Attendee: Total 605 (including participants both conferences),

  5. Total budget: Total amount: 55,216,515 yen (including Support by JSPS industry-university cooperative international cooperation program (2,000 thousand yen) and JSPS special industry-university cooperative program (800 thousand yen)).
  6. Distinguished Attendee:
    Foreign researchers: E. Bauer, H. Rose, C. Fadley, P. Varga, W. Schneider, R. Tromp, H. Lichite, N. Winograd, D. Caster, W. Vandervorst, S. Boxer
    Japanese researchers: T. Shinjo, R. Shimizu, Y. Nihei, C. Oshima, S. Morita, Y. Homma, T. Ando, T. Ushiki, M. Kudo, K. Hiraoka, H. Yurimoto, and others
  7. Outline of Conferences:
A tutorial session was programmed in the ALC’07 Hall in the afternoon of October 28. This session, where worldwide distinguished researchers were invited, was organized to cultivate and encourage for young scientists. Prof. C. Fadley, Prof. H. Lichite, Prof. T. Shinjo and Prof. S. Morita gave lectures from fundamentals to recent advanced results in each field. For instance, Prof. Shinjo, conducted newly discovered GMR effects; Prof. Fert (France) found and was a Novel laureate in 2007, which Prof. Shinjo hinted.

Special sessions were programmed in ALC’07 and SIMS XVI in order to focus on recent topics. In ALC’07, Prof. Bauer, a pioneer of LEEM/PEEM techniques, Dr. Tromp and other speakers delivered invited lectures there. Many experimental results were reported in SPM field, relating to nanotechnology. Dr. Notte also gave an attractive report about one atom ion source. On the other hand, Prof. Hirooka gave an very attractive talk, concerned with the new cluster ion source. Prof. Boxer highlighted the importance of SIMS imaging technique in analysis of biomaterials.
24 students won the student awards. They did honors in their presentations. Other several young scientists got travel expenses to visit Kanazawa besides the student awards. The 141 committee has promoted researches of young scientists with the supports and it will be. Furthermore, the 141 organizing committee selected Prof. C. Fadley (California Univ.), achieved prominent works in microbeam analysis and contributed to the 141 committee, as the winner of JSPS 141 Committee Award. He also became an honorary member of the committee.
Banquet and excursion took place in the afternoon of October 31. Participants enjoyed excursions to Eiheiji, Gokayama or Noto courses. As the total number of participants in banquet was larger than we expected, one more extra hall was added. Participants in the extra hall watched addresses and entertainments at the stage of the main hall using a large screen. Following addresses by Prof. Nihei and Prof. Kudo, Prof. Shimizu proposed a toast. Participants enjoyed local traditional entertainment “Iccho Ikkann” and drum plays by “Hyakumanngoku-Daiko”, one of drum play teams in Kanazawa. Prof. Fadley’s humorous speech made participants laugh a lot. Participants enjoyed the plays and speeches in banquet and had wonderful conversations after the banquet till late at night. The conference organization was favorably accepted with a great success.
The international organizing committee resolved to hold the site and year of the next ALC and SIMS conferences. The next ALC symposium will be held in Hawaii, 2009, and the SIMS conference, Toronto, 2009.
The cooperative conferences of ALC’07 and SIMS XVI were financially supported by the JSPS and the JSPS special industry-university cooperative program. We extremely acknowledge to these subsidies and the administrative supports by the JSPS.
