The creation of organic chemicals having new molecular function(s) (chemical, physical and biological functions, etc.), supported by the development of attractive methods for their syntheses and the pioneering of methods for the evaluation of the functions, is world-widely required in the filed of science and technology of chemistry. Recognizing such situation, the 116th Committee is supporting research/development for the creation of new functional organic chemicals and encouraging young researchers including graduate students, who will become to be leaders in the field. The 116th Committee has been promoting the cooperation between industrial, governmental and academic members to exchange their knowledge and technology and creating functional organic chemicals through the meetings for three times very year. These activities of the members of the 116th Committee as well as the principles of the 116th Committee have been widely appealed in the national lecture meetings and so on. On the basis of the steady activities, the members' opinions prompted the 116th Committee to appeal the activities to all over the world. Thus, the 116th Committee established International Forum on Chemistry of Functional Organic Chemicals in 1994, and the forum is held every three-year. PROGRAM
IFOC-5 had an enrollment of 149 participants, who came not only from Japan but also from China, Korea, India, Pakistan, U.S.A., Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Denmark.
In the closed discussion, the invited speakers and the organizing committee members frankly exchanged their opinions for the chemistry of functional organic chemicals. The main body of IFOC-5 consisted of 18 invited lectures and 98 poster presentations. All of the invited lectures were concerned with the quite recent development in science and technology of the chemistry of functional organic chemicals. The lectures were strongly impressive and suggestive to the participants; there were many eager and smart questions from the floor, some of which led the extension of the discussion times, to fill the lecture hall with earnest atmosphere. There were applications to the poster session more than the organizing committee's expectation. All of the participants enjoyed discussion with the poster presenters very much, and the poster room was also filled with earnest atmosphere. It was especially impressive that research associates, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students discussed squarely with the invited speakers and senior professors, indicating that the encouragement of young researchers, one of the objectives of this forum, was achieved.
Finally, the organizing committee acknowledges the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for the financial support and the persons concerned for their strong supports.
