| 1. Purpose |
In past, we held three times of the international symposium on Dyeing and Finishing of Textiles (ISDF): Fukui in 1994, Wakayama in 1998, and Kyoto in 2006. Every symposium gathered more than 150 participants with epoch-making success. The forth international symposium, ISDF 2009 had been planed with the same aim as before, that is, advanced and practical subjects in the field of dyeing and finishing of textiles. In addition, we had a good chance to open our symposium together with another international conference, the Tenth Asia Textile Conference held in Ueda, Nagano. The symposium has been also expected to give a good place and time to discuss a lot of subjects related with dyeing and functional finishing and processing.
A series of the symposium has been promoted and organized by JSPS 120th committee on Processing for Functionality of Fibers and Polymers, that is, the committee chair has always served as the organizing chairman for each symposium. At this time, the present committee chair, Professor Nobuo Ikuta, Shonan Inst. Tech., has also taken the organizing chair. In addition, we made the program chair that Professor Kunihiro Hamada, Shinshu University, served as.
The symposium aims at promoting fruitful scientific and technological discussions on all aspects of the dyeing and finishing of textiles and related fields including dye chemistry, dyeing machinery, and functional fiber and polymer.
For this purpose, we have been planning to invite world-class researches in these fields. Moreover, we have taken another aim as an advanced national committee in Asian countries to promote jointed research and development from discussion together with foreign participants including Asian researchers that attend Asian Textile Conference. In our symposium, we have invited researchers from U. S. and European countries so that we have a good opportunity to discuss academic and industrial subjects world-widely.

| 3. Effect and Success |
|
| Exchange Party in JSDS2009 and ATC-10 |
The first day, September 6th, had Japanese style of ‘Welcome Party’ in this afternoon together with invited speakers for individual discussion. The second day, September 7th, has three keynote addresses incorporated with Asian Textile Conference: The first lecture was entitled “Strategy of KAIHARA for Global Marketing” presented by Mr. Yoshiharu Kaihara, COE, Kaihara Company that is famous as a leading manufacture of jeans. The second speaker, Prof. Xiao-Ming Tao, Head and Chair Professor, The Hong Kong Polytech. Univ., presented his research on “Recent Developments in Intelligent Textiles and Apparel: An Emerging Trans-formative Technology.” The last presenter was Prof. Yoshiharu Kimura, Kyoto Inst. Tech., entitled “Bio-Based Fibers: For Establishing A New Paradigm of Fiber Science and Engineering.” In the evening, ATC-10 had a banquet for information exchange with 500 attendees including the member of ISDF 2009.
The symposim had oral presentations including invited sessions and poster sessions from 8th through 9th, September in Ueda Campus of Shinshu Univ. In par-ticular, invited sessions were open from the afternoon, Sept. 8th through the morning, Sept. 9th as follows.

Banquet in ISDF 2009 near the river “Chikuma-gawa”
together with invited researchers |
Every presenter gave a meaningful talk on advanced research and development in dye chemistry, dyeing, fiber treatment and industrial textile application. During the period, we had a banquet by ISDF2009 for research ex-change. Moreover, general articles from Asian foreign-ers were 19 in chemical treatment including dyeing and finishing. We also had 19 poster presentations during the symposium period.
We had a lot of successful results from our symposium, as summarized in the following; information exchange on dyeing and functional treatment of fibers and polymers, proportional exchange of international joint research, and finding of new research aims by exchange between different academic fields, as ATC-10 was incorporated. In particular, we should take attention to take care of Asian textile research so that we should make a lot of occasion for international conference held in Japan.
