9.Summary of Research Results

   In this project, we realize one particular form of "Flexible Networks". We developed the Dynamic Networking Architecture. In this architecture, a mechanism called Flexible Network Layer (FNL) is newly introduced in between existing IP network layer and application layer. We have been promoting our project aiming at the realization of an active middleware that performs as the intermediate layer between user / application and IP network infrastructure to autonomously cope with the changes on both. The primary research results are described as follows:
(1) Flexible Network Layer (FNL) concept and its realization technique:

Base technology of Dynamic Networking, which consists of "group function (a combination of middleware components) to satisfy the requirements for the FNL based on the Dynamic Networking Architecture", "function and structure of the middleware service realized by cooperating with middleware components" and "the employment and realization technique of middleware service" was established, and we succeeded in realizing the FNL as multi-agent based middleware.
(2) Agent framework for Dynamic Networking:

The tool system we developed in FNL demonstrates an effect in "creation of the middleware component by the agent which embedded various knowledge required for realization and employment of the FNL." The agents also organize "dynamic construction and reconstruction of the middleware service by the multi-agent system (multi-agent based middleware)".
(3) Utilization support and evolution of the middleware service based on multi-agent based middleware:

We developed the middleware library. It utilizes the repository function which the agent framework for Dynamic Networking offers. The middleware library accumulates effectively and manages various middleware components.
   Furthermore, based on these results, we implemented the following four and other applications for evaluation, and evaluated the effectiveness of this research: (a)Idobata-LAN system, (b)Adaptive User Interface, (c)Synchronous Multimedia Communication, (d)Asynchronous Messaging System.
