9.Summary of Research Results

This research project has been conducted in Waseda, Kyoto and Osaka Universities. The purpose of this research is to develop dynamic intelligent structures against large seismic excitations. To accomplish such a purpose, the three universities have employed their own sub-themes: the establishment of the fundamental schemes of designing dynamic intelligent structures for Waseda; real-scale model experiments for intelligent structural-control systems for Kyoto; and the development of intelligent control algorithm for large seismic excitations. In accounting for the feasibility of constructing such an intelligent control system, such keywords as nonlinearity, variable, and semiactive control play significant roles. Any of these three universities has employed at least one of these keywords in conducting researches. Each university has resulted the following outcomes. Waseda has developed a scheme of estimating the behavior of structures involving nonlinear hystereses; a semiactive control scheme based on variable slip-force level dampers (variable friction dampers); and a design methodology for variable feedback gain-based control of AMD systems. Kyoto has established an effective total experimental methodology for real-scale structural models; has demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligent control systems through experiments; and has developed a new test facility for real-sized dampers. Osaka has proposed a new type of nonlinear control scheme based on variable feedback gain involving feed-forward controller as well.
