9.Summary of Research Results
|
The transformation processes and developed microstructures in the Ti-Al binary system in the composition range between 35 and 50 at.% Al were systematically investigated. In TiAl-base alloys, the Ώ, ΐ and Α three phases are involved in microstructure formation, and thus a variety of microstructures can be obtained. The results of the experiments provided us with a systematic knowledge on the relationship between each of the possible solidification pathways and the corresponding microstructures. Mechanical properties of the lamellar microstructure of TiAl-base alloys are extremely anisotropic with respect to the lamellar orientation. However, if the lamellar microstructure can be aligned parallel to the growth direction, the resulting material should possess a good combination of mechanical properties. The seeding and directional solidification (DS) techniques were developed for the lamellar boundaries to be aligned parallel to the growth direction. The lamellar structure of a wide variety of TiAl-base alloys can be controlled using the techniques. DS ingots of these alloys exhibit an excellent combination of room temperature tensile properties and high temperature strength, in particular, creep strength. Not only secondary creep rate but also primary creep strain are reduced by aligning the lamellar boundaries along the loading axis. The addition of a small amount of Si and transition metals such as Mo, W and Re even dramatically increases creep resistance of DS ingots of TiAl-base alloys. Tensile and creep properties of MoSi2 and related silicides were systematically investigated. Also various properties of a Mo5Si3-base borosilicide were investigated. [001]-oriented MoSi2 and the borosilicide exhibit much better high-temperature creep resistance than advanced ceramics-base materials. |
