9.Summary of Research Results
|
In this research project, the creation of functional nano- and micro-sized spaces in the carbon materials was realized by mainly three processing routes, intercalation, solid solution and precursor control. 1. Intercalation into interlayer space of carbon materials gave new nanospace, of which size and functions were able to control by the selection of intercalates. Into these nanospaces, various organic molecules, such as ethylene, acrylonitrile and various ethers, were adsorbed. The size of these nanospaces was assessed through image analysis of lattice fringe of transmission electron microscope. 2. Doping of foreign atoms, such as boron, nitrogen, iron, nickel, etc., was successfully performed by selection the precursors and processing parameters, and was found to created various nanospaces and to modify the electronic and magnetic functions of carbon materials. By oxidation, intrinsic nano- and micro-spaces in some carbon materials were allowed to open to atmosphere and were shown to improve their adsorption function. 3. Through the selection of carbon precursors, various resins and woods, and their carbonization conditions, the spaces created in resultant carbon materials were found to be controlled their size from nanometers to micrometers and their concentration. High adsorption performance for various gases and liquids, including chlorinated hydrocarbons, radiative radon and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Fracture behavior of carbon fiber/carbon composites was successfully analyzed through the fractal analysis of microspaces formed in the materials. |
