9.Summary of Research Results
|
This project aims to reutilize demolished concrete as recycling construction materials because a very large amount of demolished concrete waste is being generated every year and for establishing a recycling system taking life-cycle into consideration, in this project not only recycling technology but also the environmental impacts and economical aspects of the established recycling system have been studied. In addition, studies on the recycling methods for demolished asphalt concrete and timber have also been carried out. One of the main attempts of the research of this project is at the reuse of demolished concrete as recycled aggregate, because by this way demolished concrete can be effectively consumed in amount. At first, various recycled aggregates with different properties were prepared with different concretes and varied processing methods and crushing levels, then the performances of the concretes with them were widely investigated. The result shows that compared with concrete with natural aggregate, recycled aggregate concretes are equivalent in strength, only behave somewhat inferiorly in drying shrinkage, freeze-thaw resistance, fatigue characteristic and resistance to penetration. In RC members the use of it is without any problems. Followings are the proposals of this project in regard to the recycling system of concrete: (1) The quality of recycled aggregate is more dependent on the strength of original concrete rather than the adhered mortar content of it. Therefore, it is not very necessary and not very good to reduce adhered mortar in recycled aggregate by high-level processing, because much energy will be consumed and a large amount of powder that is difficult to dispose of will be produced in the further processing. (2) For the purpose of recycling use, it is essential to produce concrete with strength higher than that demanded by recycled aggregate concrete. (3) According to the result of comparing and evaluating the energy to be taken in the recycling process of demolished concrete and the resultant increased CO2 generation as well, it is recommended that the powder generated in the production of recycled aggregate should be recycled in the production of cement as raw material. Besides, in cooperation with JSPS 76 Committee on Construction Materials an international workshop was held in September of 2000 for the purpose of reporting the results of this project and the latest development in this field to the world. |
