10.Summary of Research Results
|
Hayashi: Wings and legs of Drosophila are born from a common group of precursor cells in the embryo but how the two thoracis appendages are separated to form distinct structures are not understood. We assessed roles of two signaling pathways, Dpp and EGFR, that are known to transduce morphogen activities. By monitoring nuclear transduction of the signals, we show that the limb primordium is asymmetric in term of the activation of the two signals and cells assess balance of the signals to decide on whether to differentiate as the wing of leg. Tabata: Tabata and co-workers used anti-phosphorylated MAD to monitor activation pattern of Dpp signal in the wing imaginal disc. They showed that activity gradient is modulated by the level of thickveins expression, which is controlled by Hedgehog and a novel gene master of thickveins. Hiromi: They questioned the problem of how sensory organs are placed in specific positions in the segment. They showed that formation of the eye and stretch receptor are under common special and temporal constraints, suggesting that that those organs are derived from a common proto sensory organ. Noji: They studied limb development of hemimetabolous insect cricket. They showed that expression patterns of hh, wg, hth, dac, al in thoracic limbs are basically homologous to those observed in Drosophila leg imaginal discs. However, the expression pattern of dpp was strikingly different fro Drosophila, as well as methathoracic leg compared to pro- and mesoyhoracic legs. Theses observations suggest change on dpp expression correlates with diversification of limb patterns. |
