10.Summary of Research Results

In this project, we have made fundamental and practical studies of materials for spin electronics. The research works are broadly classified into two categories: One is the study of granular films consisting of nanometer-sized metal particles embedded in an insulating matrix, and the other is the study of metallic superlattices fabricated by monatomic layer control. The main object for the study of granular films is to elucidate the magnetotransport in the systems where both spin dependent tunneling and Coulomb blockade contribute to electronic transport. We have prepared granular films with reduced dimensions through the use of microfabrication technique, and found new phenomena such as the enhancement of tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and the oscillation of TMR as a function of bias voltage. The discovery of these phenomena will provide useful information for the developments of spin dependent single electron devices. Furthermore, the driving field of TMR in granular films is remarkably reduced by preparing Granular-In-Gap (GIG) structure, which has opened the way to the application of granular films to TMR devices. It has also been revealed from the viewpoint of soft magnetism that granular films are highly potential materials for the practical use to various magnetic cores and absorbers of electromagnetic wave. In the study of metallic superlattices, we have succeeded in the artificial fabrication of CoRu ordered alloy by alternate deposition of Co and Ru monatomic layers. The control of layered structure on a monatomic layer scale, and consequently the control of magnetic properties such as magnetic anisotropies, magnetic coupling and magnetooptical effects, have been demonstrated. Furthermore, the magnetic properties have been found to agree with the results of first-principles calculations, indicating that the design and the control of materials at the atomic level are feasible.
