本研究は、フラーレンおよびカーボンナノチューブについて、これら新奇人工物質の特異な電気的、光学的および磁気的性質など基礎的物性を明らかにし、同時にナノメター領域における電子デバイス応用への基礎研究によって近未来における重要な科学分野を開拓しようとしたものである。 　単層カーボンナノチューブについては、光吸収スペクトル測定によるエネルギー構造研究に加え、今回、波長可変レーザーを光源とし微細加工した伝導測定端子を用いることにより、初めて光伝導スペクトルの観測に成功し、半導体相の電子構造を決定し、同時に、ナノチューブが1次元半導体として機能することを示した。さらに、AFM/STS二重法を開発し、AFM制御によってチップ位置を制御しながら、試料の任意の場所における伝導度およびSTSスペクトルを観測することに成功した。ナノチューブの局所電子構造の研究や金属チューブと半導体チューブの空間的分布図を明確にできる点で画期的な手法と言える。 　C60化合物における超伝導と反強磁性相の研究　アルカリ土類元素の化合物を合成し、C60分子の第2LUMO伝導帯に起因する超伝導体を系統的に研究した。この結果、n=8,9,10に対し超伝導相が生じることを初めて明らかにした。これらの超伝導体では、アルカリ土類元素のpおよびd軌道とC60分子軌道が混成され伝導帯が再編成されているが、BCS超伝導体と考えられる事を明らかにした。さらに、これらフラーレン超伝導体相は、C60分子間距離dの増加させることによって、金属から絶縁体に、しかも、反強磁性相に転移する事を発見し、TN対dの相図を完成させ、単一バンド・ハバード系の相図に酷似することを示した。この金属−絶縁体転移の起因は、低温における結晶の対称性の低下が、分子軌道準位の分裂を生じ、この有効バンド幅の減少によってモット転移が起こったと考えられる。 　希土類C60化合物の磁気物性については、Eu6C60が低温で強磁性転移を持つこと、さらに強磁性転移温度以下で極めて大きい負の磁気抵抗（低温・高磁場では、3桁以上も減少）、Giant Negative Magnetoresistance現象、を示すことを明らかにした。通常のGMR現象とは明らかに性質が異なるが、多結晶試料における微粒子間のスピン依存トンネル伝導モデルで説明が可能であることを示した。
