10.Summary of Research Results
|
This research aims at scientifically building a model of synthesis. First, we propose an analysis oriented thought process model, a synthesis oriented thought process model, and a multiple model-based reasoning framework for synthesis on which a model of synthesis processes will be executed. This synthesis process model consists of knowledge operations that are decomposed again into logic operations and modeling operations. Third, we discuss fundamental ideas of the projects including function modeling, ontology, semantics constrained abduction, and model-based abduction. Forth, a reference test case of design is constructed and used for verifying the models of synthesis we build. We also developed a computational benchmarking test bed. Through these verification activities, we found out that these models as a whole describe and explain synthesis without any major contractions, but there does not exit a single model of synthesis. This results from another finding that abduction is the guiding principle of synthesis in the meanings of both of creation and integration and integrating multiple theories requires a common ontology. However, at this moment there exists no such a common ontology about synthesis as activities but only a collection of vocabulary that consists of 23 concepts, thus resulting in a set of independent models of synthesis that collectively explain synthesis. |
