In this research we pursued researches on various aspects of information analysis, acquisition and utilization which are indispensable for implementing information systems that allow us to use information and knowledge in variety of media scattered over the Internet without caring about the location of information. For digitization and browsing of documents in paper form, images and motion pictures accumulated for years, diversified techniques such as document image processing, document structure analysis, structured document processing, retrieval and summarization of text and images are required. As one of key technologies for distributed information architecture, metadata-centered system architecture was proposed and implemented for media integration. We devised practical techniques for document image structure analysis and integration of bibliography, applying them to scientific papers. In the area of text processing, studies on high-precision information retrieval, multilingual keyword clusters to extract synonymous relationship of terms, cross-lingual information retrieval and construction of large-scale test collection for IR evaluation, text summarization and term extraction were performed. On the other hand, prototypes for easy-to-use visual interfaces and image retrieval systems for identification and retrieval of human faces, and a musical phrase retrieval system for music databases were implemented for demonstration purpose. One of the research results which can be utilized for years are the NTCIR test collections for IR evaluation, which were constructed through two workshops sponsored by this project. The CD-ROMS which contains large-scale text databases of 730 thousand records in total, queries in Japanese and English, and the results of relevance judgments are used by many research groups for further enhancement of IR techniques. Forty-five teams from 8 countries participated in the 2nd workshop that was held in March, 2001. In addition to these workshops, we had a symposium in March, 2000, where most of our researches were presented. |
