10.Summary of Research Results
|
To realize broadband telecommunications network, all the components in the network must cooperate based on an identical principle. Since technology changes rapidly, an architecture is needed which permits wide variety of new technologies to cooperate. In the present project, to realize the architecture, advanced new knowledge were obtained in high capacity transmission, switch/nodes and broadband terminal equipment. In the future backbone network, optical-time-division multiplexing (OTDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technologies will play an important role in order to realize over Tera bit/s transmission capacity. In this project, we developed novel OTDM/WDM transmitter using super-continuum generation from optical fibers. We also proposed and demonstrated several ultra-fast optical transmission schemes that were based on compensation for group-velocity dispersion of optical fibers. An optical cross-connect switch, where WDM channels were routed by tunable optical fiber Bragg gratings, was constructed for the first time, and basic characteristics were examined. In the access technology we studied novel schemes to combine optical and wireless communication technologies effectively. We proposed and demonstrated new techniques to generate, process, and transmit mm-wave electromagnetic waves through optical fibers. In switch and node technology study, new switch architecture for IP (Internet Protocol) router and video specific switch is examined to achieve capacity of multi Tera bit/sec. In IP node study, quasi-variable length packet batcher banyan switch, down-loop switch, ring banyan switch, and ring shuffles switch are proposed for a method of switch fabric of IP router. The feasibility of switch configuration is confirmed by basic LVSI design to achieve Tera bit/sec. For a method of switch fabric of video switch, a variable bit are TDM switch architecture is proposed to sausty this demand. In broadband terminal study, novel image representation and production based on multiple images have been investigated. The work is categorized into two topics (1) image representation and visual effect generation by using multiple differently focused images, and (2) wide view, high resolution image generation by using multiple (many) images. A new camera system for the new image generation scheme has been also developed. In general, real images, which are captured even by HDTV cameras, have not enough resolution for the Immersive Projection Technologies (IPT). In order to solve this problem, we proposed two methods shared space communications based on real images suitable for IPT systems i.e. Multi-Resolution Stereoscopic Communication Using a Set of Four Cameras and Image-Based Immersive Walkthrough Using High-Resolution Panoramic Images.
