10.Summary of Research Results
|
Nowadays there are various platforms for distributed and parallel supercomputing, ranging from dedicated parallel computers to Beowulf PC clusters, furthermore to internet-connected computing resources. It is very important how to present such various computing resources to users and how to control resources. To cope with these varieties of platforms, we have carried out researches from various technical point of views, especially, 1) Thread scheduling problems, 2) Language processing systems and related software tools to provide with users programming views easy to use., 3) construction of runtime systems which hide varieties of platforms from users view. Scheduling problems arises both in compilers and in runtime systems. From view point of systems design and implementation, we carried out researches in design and implementation of the parallelizing compiler which supports automatic data distribution, software tools for parallelization, runtime systems, especially software distributed shared memory systems, a compiler for metacomputing, a compiler for nonnumeric computation, a Java thread migration system and a web-based problem solving environment for high performance electromagnetic field computation. We have also carried out researches for practical multi-processor scheduling problems and benchmarking task graph sets for fair evaluation of task scheduling algorithms. These research results were presented as research exhibitions at SC98 (Orlando, Florida; SC; Super Computing XX, Conference on High Performance Networking and Computing), SC99 (Portland, Oregon), SC200 (Dallas, Texas). As far as scheduling algorithms, we organized a Workshop of ACM ICS (International Conference on Supercomputing) 99.; Workshop on Scheduling Algorithms--- from Theory to Practice---, in Greece in 1999. |
