15th NCI-JSPS JOINT STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING

MINUTES
The 15th Joint US-Japan Steering Committee on Cancer Research met on June 22, 1992, at the Silverado Hotel in Napa Valley, California. In attendance were: Drs. Toshiyuki Hamaoka, Shiro Miwa, Makoto Ogawa, Haruo Sugano, and Masaaki Terada, and Mr. Satoru Endo for Japan and Drs. Richard Adamson, Michael Friedman, Richard Hodes Robert Miller, Tsuyoshi Kakefuda, and Federico Welsch for the United States. The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by the co-chairs, Drs. Adamson and Miwa. Both congratulated those present for the success of the joint workshops and scientist exchange programs.
Drs. Adamson and Terada reviewed progress for the Cancer Etiology Program Area, Drs. Hodes and Hamaoka the Cancer Biology and Diagnosis Program Area, Drs. Friedman and Ogawa the Cancer Treatment Program Area, and Drs. Miller and Sugano the Interdisciplinary Program Area. Detailed progress is summarized in the following Progress Report in the afternoon, the above scientists reviewed the program plans for 1992-93. As in the past workshops, scientist exchanges, and exchange of materials will take place. Details of programs planned for 1992-93 will appear in the 16th Progress Report.
The participants agreed that the next Joint Steering Committee Meeting will be held in Sapporo on June 17-18, 1993. The U.S. side proposed that the air fares of the participants of the future Committee Meeting be paid by the receiving side. Dr. Miwa replied that the proposal will be deliberated within JSPS.
The meeting closed at 5:00 p.m. after remarks by Drs. Adamson and Miwa. The meeting was followed by a working dinner hosted by the NCI and the next day by a working lunch hosted by the JSPS.

FUTURE PLANS
Eleven future seminars or symposia are envisioned, nine in the U.S. and two in Japan. Ten Japanese scientists will be visiting U.S. laboratories in the Exchange Scientists Program financially supported by the JSPS. Research materials will continue to be exchange reciprocally as during the past years to collaborative research between the U.S. and Japan.
