14th NCI-JSPS JOINT STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
Okinawa Miyako Hotel, Naha, Okinawa, Japan, July 1-2, 1991

The 14th meeting of the Steering Committee of the US-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program was held at the Miyako Hotel in Okinawa on July 1 and 2, 1991. Those attending for Japan were: Drs. Shiro Miwa, Takashi Sugimura, Haruo Sugano, Toshiyuki Hamaoka, and Makoto Ogawa, and Messrs. Nagahide Onozawa and Sho Hagio. Those attending for the U.S. were Drs. Richard Adamson, Richard Hodes, Michael Friedman, Robert Miller, Tsuyoshi Kakefuda, and Federico Welsch.
Dr. Miwa, a Director of JSPS and Director of the Okinaka Memorial Institute for Medical Research in Tokyo, opened the meeting at 9:00 a.m., welcoming all participants. Dr. Adamson responded calling the US-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program the foremost bilateral program of the NCI. Dr. Adamson noted that the cancer incidence in Okinawa was different from mainland Japan and more like that in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Dr. Ogawa expressed his satisfaction with the advances in chemotherapy which have resulted from the US-Japan collaboration. The group reviewed, in detail, the scientific activities of the 1990-1991 areas: Cancer Etiology, Cancer Biology and Diagnosis, Cancer Treatment, and Interdisciplinary.
There were three US-Japan workshops in the Etiology area: Prostate cancer, Cancer risk assessment of environmental chemicals, and Prevalence and structure of the hepatitis C virus. The three workshops in the Biology and Diagnosis area were: Signal transduction and gene regulation in cancer, Lymphocyte adhesion and its related signal transduction, and Molecular mechanisms in oncogenesis and tumor progression. In the Treatment area the joint workshops were: Current treatment strategy of lung cancer, New drugs and antimetastatic drugs, and The role of growth factors in cancer treatment. The workshops in the Interdisciplinary area were entitled: Transplacental and transgeneration carcinogenesis and pathophysiology of renal cancer. A summary of each workshop, including a listing of the participants, has been included in this Progress Report.
Eleven Japanese scientists visited U.S. laboratories under the NCI-JSPS Scientist Exchange Program (see each Program Area report).
Three grams of 2-Amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo [4,5-f]quinoline(MeIQ) and 2 grams of 2-Amino-3,4,8-trimethylimidazo [4,5-f]quinoxaline were exchanged between the NCI and National Cancer Center (NCC), Japan.
The group then discussed the workshops proposed and scientist exchanges for 1991-1992 (Appendix: Future Plans). It is expected that NCC will send NCI 18 grams of 2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP).
Dr. Welsch then presented a request by the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences asking that they be allowed to send an observer to the next US-Japan Steering Committee Meeting. The committee will deliberate on this issue anew before the next committee meeting.
Dr. Welsch then offered to have his office pay for three intramural and three extramural scientists' airfare and per diem costs in Japan if such scientists would like to spend 10 to 15 days in the laboratory of a Japanese scientist to either learn a technique or work out a collaborative project.
The participants agreed that the next meeting will be held in Silverado, Napa Valley on June 22-23, 1992
The meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
On July 2 at 6:00 p.m. the group met with Drs. Akira Osawa (Dean and Professor of Urology), Kunio Ibaraki (Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of the University Hospital), Masao Nakano (Professor of Radiology), Yoshihiro Muto (Professor of Surgery), and Teruo Iwamasa (Professor of Pathology) of the Ryukyo University Medical School. They expressed interest in participating in the US-Japan bilateral agreements in cancer research. Dean Osawa received a description of OIA programs and the guidelines for short-term scientist exchanges.
After lectures by Drs. Adamson and Ogawa, the group participated in a reception jointly organized by the JSPS and the University of Ryukyus.

Respectfully submitted,

Federico Welsch, M.D., Ph.D.

FUTURE PLANS
Twelve future seminars or symposia are envisioned, nine in the U.S. and three in Japan. Twelve Japanese scientists will be visiting U.S. laboratories in the Exchange Scientists Program financially supported by the JSPS. Research materials will continued to be exchanged reciprocally as did during past years for collaborative research between the U.S. and Japan.
