PREFACE
This report is the fifth in a series summarizing the activities for the period between April 1988 through March 1989 of the US-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program during the third five-year period of its operation. In this volume, detailed scientific progress reports from each of the four program areas are given along with an administrative summary outlining overall activities.
Since its inception in May 1974, the US-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program has been instrumental in establishing a close working relationship between researchers in Japan and the United States and in providing an important means of exchanging scientific information, modern technology, and materials. These activities have significantly contributed to the impressive progress that has marked cancer research and treatment in recent years. In October 1983, the Program was renewed for a third five-year period beginning April 1, 1984, to March 31, 1989. Extension of another five-year period beginning April 1, 1989, has already been approved by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). We are confident that the Program will continue to grow and bear fruit, thus bringing valuable contributions to scientific communities of both countries. Application of research and technology for cancer control programs will benefit our society to an enormous extent.
Dr. Federico Welsch has been appointed the Associate Director for International Affairs, NCI, and will join the Program.
Mr. Yasushi Murao, who spent a great amount of effort promoting this Program, has left his assignment as the head of the Research Cooperation Division, JSPS. Mr. Nagahide Onozawa, who previously served as head of the Division, returned to that position.
The dedicated contributions to the Program by Mr. Murao and Mr. Tatsuo Kishi of the JSPS and Ms. Beverly Schaff and Mrs. Jean Cross of the National Cancer Institute are greatly acknowledged.
