PREFACE

This report is the fourth in a series summarizing the activities for the period between April 1987 through Mach 1988 of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program during the thrid five-year period of its operation. In this volume, detailed scientific progress reports from each of the four program areas are given along with an administrative summary outlining overall activities.
Since its inception in May 1974, the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program has been instrumental in establishing a close working relationship between researchers in Japan and the United States and in providing an important means of exchanging scienfitic information, modern technology, and materials. These activities have significantly contributed to the impressive progress that has marked cancer research and treatment in recent years. In October 1983, the Program was renewed for a third five-year period beginning April 1, 1984 to March 31, 1989. We are confident that the Program will continue to grow and bear fruit, thus bringing valuable contributions to scientific communities of both countries. Application of research and technology for cancer control programs will benefit our society to an enormous extent.
Dr. Ihor Masnyk, who served as acting director of the Office of International Affairs, as well as supported this program for the past several years, has left the position. The dedicated contributions to the program by Dr. Masnyk and Ms. Beverly Schaff of the Office of International Affairs, NCI, and Mr. Yasushi Murao and Mr. Tasuo Kishi of the Japan Society for the promotion of Science are greatly acknowledged.
