PREFACE
This report is the third in a series summarizing the activities for the period between April 1986 through March 1987 of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program during the third five-year period of its operation. In this volume, detailed scientific progress reports from each of the four program areas are given along with an administrative summary outlining overall activities.
Since its inception in May 1974, the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program has been instrumental in establishing a close working relationship between researchers in Japan and the United States and in providing an important means of exchanging scientific information, modern technology, and materials. These activities have significantly contributed to the impressive progress that has marked cancer research and treatment in recent years. In October 1983, the Program was renewed for a third five-year period beginning April 1, 1984 to March 31, 1989. We are confident that the Program will continue to grow and bear fruit, thus bringing valuable contributions to scientific communities of both countries. Application of research and technology for cancer control programs will benefit our society to an enormous extent.
Mr. Nagahide Onozawa, who spent many years in an enormous effort promoting this Program, has left his assignment as the head of the Research Cooperation Division to take another position at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Mr. Yasushi Murao has assumed the position that Mr. Onozawa vacated.
The dedicated contributions to the Program by Mr. Onozawa and Ms. Beverly Schaff of the National Cancer Institute are gratefully acknowledged.
