PREFACE

This report is the second in a series summarizing the activities for the period between April 1985 through March 1986 of the US-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program during the third 5-year period of its operation. In this volume detailed progress reports from each of the four program areas are given along with an administrative summary out-lining overall activities.
Since its inception in May 1974, the US-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program has been instrumental in establishing a close working relationship between researchers in Japan and the United States and in providing an important means of exchanging scientific information, modern technology, and materials. These activities have significantly contributed to the impressive progress that has marked cancer research and treatment in recent years. In October 1983, the program was renewed for a third 5-year period beginning April 1, 1984 to March 31, 1989. We are confident that the program will continue to grow and bear fruit, thus bringing valuable contributions to scientific communities of both countries. Application of research and technology for cancer control programs will benefit our society to an enormous extent.
Dr. Makoto Ogawa became the coordinator of the Treatment Program Area replacing Dr. Yoshio Sakurai, who had served in the program since 1974. Dr. Tsuyoshi Kakefuda assumed the Acting Executive Secretary position on the U.S. side and replaced Dr. Robert R. Omata. Dr. Omata served as the Executive Secretary since the program began and retired last year from the U.S. Public Health Service. It is our sincere hope that the future will be more successful through the increasing scientific cooperation and exchanges through this program, as well as other international programs of biomedical sciences.
The dedicated contributions of Ms. Beverly Schaff of the National Cancer Institute and Mr. Nagahide Onozawa of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science are greatly acknowledged.
