BIOLOGY AND DIAGNOSIS PROGRAM AREA

Program Coordinators: Dr. Richard J. Hodes, U.S.
Dr. Yuichi Yamamura, Japan

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

From April 1, 1985 to March 31, 1986, the major activities of this program area consisted of the organization and holding of three seminars and the exchange of foreign scientists between U.S. and Japan. The seminar held in the Immunology area centered about "analysis of host's immune responses involved in anti-tumor immune resistence." In Cell Biology, a seminar was held to discuss "regulation of expression and function of transformation-related genes." The third meeting, in Diagnosis, discussed "Cell surface markers and genes." An exchange of scientists included the visit of one American scientist to Japan, and visits by four Japanese scientists to the United States. These visits were generally of two to three weeks in duration, but with the exception of Dr. Takashi Nishimura who visited the laboratory of Dr. Steven Burakoff at Harvard University for one full year in order to carry out research in the evaluation of immunoregulatory mechanisms.
