PREFACE
This report is the fourth in a series summarizing the activities for the period between April 1982 and March 1983 of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program during the second 5-year period of its operation, from 1979 to 1984. In addition to an administrative report outlining overall activities, this volume also includes detailed progress reports in each program area.
Since its inception in May 1974, the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program has been instrumental in establishing a close working relationship between researchers in Japan and the United States and in providing an important means of exchanging scientific information. It can be said with confidence that this activity has significantly contributed, both directly and indirectly, to the impressive progress that has marked cancer research in recent years.
It is our sincere hope that scientists in both countries will continue to make use of the cooperative bonds that have been cultivated under the Program, and that the future will bring further progress in pure research and in the application of research results for the general benefit of society.
The implementing agencies deeply appreciate the enthusiastic and unselfish efforts that the Program coordinators and principal advisors have devoted toward the Program's successful implementation. It is our sincere hope that the future will prove even more successful and fruitful through the increasing interest and participation of cancer researchers of both countries in this cooperative program. The dedicated contributions of Mrs. Beverly Schaff, Ms. Andrea Barletta, Mr. Nagahide Onozawa, and Mr. Iwao Abe of the National Cancer Institute and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science are gratefully acknowledged. The editorial contributions of Mrs. Erica Adams, Ms. Alicia Doherty, and Mrs. Donna James, as well as the clerical contributions of Mrs. Roberta Roeder, Mrs. Zelda Shaffer and Ms. Aileen Walsh are also gratefully acknowledged.
