PREFACE

This report is the third in a series summarizing the activities of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program during the second five-year period of its operation, from 1979-1983. In addition to an administrative report outlining overall activities, this volume also includes detailed progress reports in each program area, as well as a list of collaborative publications.
Since its inception in May of 1974, the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program has been instrumental in establishing a close working relationship between researchers in Japan and the United States, and providing an important means of ex-changing scientific information. It can be said with confidence that this activity has significantly contributed, both directly and obliquely, to the impressive progress which has marked cancer research in recent years.
It is our sincere hope that scientists in both countries will continue to make use of the cooperative bonds that have been cultivated under this program, and that the future will bring further progress both in pure research and in the application of research results for the benefit of society in general.
In concluding we wish to acknowledge with gratitude the efforts of the coordinators and principal advisors on both sides who made this report possible.
