ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The major accomplishments in this first year of the new program area Cancer Biology, Immunology, and Diagnosis have concerned exchange of information, reagents, and personnel.
The program in general has become more oriented toward basic science developments and; as a consequence, joint scientific seminars providing maximum opportunity to exchange unpublished information and research ideas have become more important. The principal advisors for the Cellular and Molecular Biology Area, Drs. Ikawa and Pastan, initiated their new program with a stimulating conference on Src and Leuk Genes; while the advisors for Immunology, Drs. Hamaoka and Hodes, changed the direction of the immunology program and arranged a conference that focussed on new laboratory findings in immunology. Both conferences were quite successful.
The proceedings of a previous conference held under the sponsorship of this program have been published (W.D. Terry and Y. Yamamura (Eds.): Immunobiology and Immunotherapy of Cancer. Elsevier North-Holland, New York, NY, 1979, 424 pp.)
While the Immunology and the Cellular & Molecular Biology Areas are concentrating on basic science, the Diagnosis Area continues to provide a forum for joint development of automated cytology techniques.
This very important area has great potential for improving our capacity to detect abnormal cells and has implication for screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Continued development is anticipated, although there are many problems.
