The Program for Promotion of Humanities and Social Sciences to Satisfy Policy and Social Demands, consisting of the 'Program for Area Studies Based on Needs of Society,' the 'Program for Promoting Social Science Research Aimed at Solutions of Near-Future Problems' and the 'Japan Studies Based on International Collaboration,' supports project-based research in the humanities and social sciences at the university level. It addresses policy and social needs and aims at disseminating the result of the research to the public. Based on assessments of the \"21st Century COE Program\" and verifications of its results to date carried out by MEXT from FY2002, a decision was made to establish the \"Global COE (Centers of Excellence) Program\". The program will provide funding support for establishing education and research centers that perform at the apex of global excellence to elevate the international competitiveness of the Japanese universities. The program will strengthen and enhance the education and research functions of graduate schools, to foster highly creative young researchers who will go on to become world leaders in their respective fields through experiencing and practicing research of the highest world standard.
JSPS has established the \"Global COE Program Committee\" to oversee the grant selection process and COE performance assessment under the program.

","Program for Enhancing Systematic Education in Graduate schoolls
Under this program, human resources are not limited to researchers but include talented young people who will go on to play active roles as leaders in the industrial and other sectors of society. Priority support is given to highly effective, systematic initiatives directed at improving education in master’s and doctoral programs at Japanese university graduate schools. Such initiatives are expected to dramatically enhance course curriculum development while promoting internationalization, hence, improving graduate education quality. Program funding is carried by MEXT, with JSPS conducting application screening and grantee selection.

","Program for Promoting University Education
In Japan, higher education is expected to be effective in fostering talented young people who will be the mainstay of a knowledge-intensive society. As the country approaches an era of mass university enrollment, tertiary educational systems will also need to be responsive to wider diversity in student knowledge, study habits and learning motivation. Under this program, universities, junior colleges and national colleges of technology are eligible to apply for grants to sustain their educational capacity and improve their education quality. Priority financial support is given to adopted applications judged most effective for achieving these goals. Through this targeted support and the widespread dissemination of emulative results, the program aims to contribute to strengthening the guarantee for quality higher education in Japan.

","Project for Establishing University Network for Internationalization(Global 30)
Rooted in the framework of the \“300,000 International Students Plan,\” Eenacted by MEXT and other ministries, this project was established in 2009 to elevate the international competitiveness of Japanese tertiary education while fostering students and researchers on internationalized campuses so as to give them the ability to play active roles in the global arena.
The selected universities are expected to develop themselves as Japan\’s leading internationalization hubs by providing a high quality of education and an environment that makes it easy for students from other countries to study in Japan.
In carrying out this program, JSPS established the \“Global 30 Committee\” to oversee the grant selection process and assess the performance of the program\'s core universities.

","World Premier International Research Center Initiative(WPI Program)
The World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI Program) provides priority support for projects aimed at creating top world-level research centers staffed at their core with the world's most leading researchers. By achieving a very high research standard and providing an excellent research environment, the centers should possess a level of \"global visibility\" that attracts top researchers from around the world.
Based on \"3rd Science and Technology Basic Plan\" (issued by Cabinet, March 28, 2006) and \"Comprehensive Strategy for Creating Innovation\" (issued by Council for Science and Technology Policy, June 14, 2006), WPI program was established by MEXT in FY2007. JSPS is commissioned by MEXT to conduct grant selection and project assessment processes and perform other administrative functions in accordance with guidelines established by the Ministry.

It is a program that provides JSPS Fellows with opportunities to give lectures on their research work at high schools in the vicinity of their Japanese host institutes. These talented young scientists from abroad volunteer to participate in this program.

As for the Fellows, their participation will give them an opportunity to enjoy an exchange with local community while strengthening their ties with Japan.

The International Prize for Biology was instituted in April of 1985 by the Committee on the International Prize for Biology. It aims to commemorate the sixty-year reign of Emperor Showa and his longtime devotion to biological research and also to offer tribute to the present Emperor His Majesty Emperor Akihito, who has strived over many years to advance the study taxonomy of gobioid fishes while contributing continuously to the developing of this Prize. The award ceremony is held in the presence of His Majesty the Emperor.

","Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize
The spread of infectious diseases presents a common threat to all humankind. Mindful that Africa faces this scourge most acutely, the Government of Japan established the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize in July 2006 in memory of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi (1876-1929) whose belief in medical advancement and self-sacrificing activities in Africa remain a beacon of inspiration to all. Guided by these ideals and mindful of the ominous human suffering persisting in Africa, the region facing the most serious health challenge on the globe, the Prize aims to honour individuals with outstanding achievements in the fields of medical research and medical services to combat infectious and other diseases in Africa, thus contributing to the health and welfare of the African people and of all humankind.
