Purpose

With an aim to bolster the international competitiveness of Japanese higher education, this program works to thoroughly internationalize Japanese universities by establishing linkages between them and top-flight overseas universities and advancing university reforms. Priority support is given to universities that have top world-level education and research programs and to global universities that can drive the internationalization of Japan’s higher education.

Features

Type A: Top Type
For world-class universities that have the potential to be ranked in the top 100 in world university rankings.
Type B: Global Traction Type
For innovative universities that lead the internationalization of Japanese society, based on continuous improvement of their current efforts.

Type A: 13 universities
Type B: 24 universities

Funding period

Up to 10 years

Evaluation

Follow-up reviews of projects are carried out every fiscal year, except for the year in which an interim evaluation is conducted. The interim evaluation is carried out at the four years and seven years juncture of projects. Then, a post-project evaluation is carried out after funding ends. Implementation plans are reviewed based on the evaluation results, and adjustments may be made to them including project termination.
